Rumor: Apple is working on folding iPhone
That claims Jon Prosser in the latest episode of his YouTube show FrontPageTech. The Apple insider reports that Apple is currently working on an experimental iPhone that you can open and close. This so-called clambshell design is currently used by, for example, the Motorola Razr and Galaxy Z Flip from Samsung.
According to Prosser, Apple continues with this folding design. On the other hand, the company would no longer invest energy in developing a foldable iPhone, following the example of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold. Prosser’s sources do not clarify why Apple has shifted attention.
‘Foldable iPhone is not coming’
Furthermore, the insider mentions that the foldable iPhone should be relatively affordable. Apple would not market the device as a Pro model. Instead, according to Prosser, the device is available in multiple, playful colors that are explicitly not aimed at a professional target group.
Finally, Prosser mentions that it is not yet clear if and when the foldable iPhone will be available. According to the insider, Apple is currently working on prototypes, but it remains to be seen whether the product is either viable for an actual announcement.
Copying from the competition
Motorola and Samsung, among others, currently have a few folding phones in their range. These devices open and close vertically. This makes them very compact when folded while you still have a relatively large screen at your disposal. Furthermore, these clambshell devices fit more easily in trouser pockets.
There have been rumors since 2017 that Apple is working on an experimental iPhone with a completely new design. Most rumors claim that this device consists of two separate screens that can be opened and closed, making it technically not ‘foldable’. However, concrete rumors have not appeared so far.
