New Macs with M2 chip on the way

Apple is working on at least nine new Macs with a brand new M2 chip under the hood. This is evidenced by internal developer logs sifted by Bloomberg† According to the reliable source, it concerns a MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini and Mac Pro. We’ve been hearing rumors about some of these Macs for months.

Especially the redesigned MacBook Air regularly makes the news. Apple analyst Mark Gurman recently that we will be seeing the laptop for the first time on June 6, during Apple’s WWDC event. The new MacBook Air would get a refreshed design, with all colors and white screen edges. According to Bloomberg the laptop will get an M2 chip with a ten-core CPU and an eight-core GPU.

The source also writes about two Mac minis – one with a regular M2 chip and one with an M2 Pro. As expected, Apple is also working on a successor to the MacBook Pro 2021. It concerns both a 14-inch and a 16-inch model. The laptop comes in both an M2 Pro configuration and a variant with an M2 Max chip. The current M1 Pro and M1 Max chips are already incredibly powerful, so we’re excited to see what Apple has in store for us.

Then there’s the Mac Pro, which hasn’t been upgraded in a while. Apple now sells the Mac Studio, which runs on an M1 Ultra chip. This is the most powerful Mac Apple has ever made. Nevertheless, the manufacturer works according to Bloomberg to an even faster Mac Pro, which is “driven by the successor to the M1 Ultra.” Logically this would be the M2 Ultra, but this name is not mentioned. Perhaps Apple has other plans.

So while all kinds of new Macs with M2 chips are coming, Apple still doesn’t seem to be done with the M1. In the developer logs, there is also talk about a Mac mini with an M1 Pro chip. The current Mac mini is only available in combination with the regular M1.

Whether the logs speak the truth is of course not entirely certain. We won’t know until Apple actually announces its new Macs. Last year, however, the same logs also predicted the arrival of the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. So we have a hunch that 2022 will be a good year for the Mac.
