Apple is preparing at least 9 Macs with M2 chips: the first details
Apple is currently preparing at least nine Macs that use four variants of the M2 chip. According to Bloombergwhich relies on developer logs, Apple is currently testing with third-party applications.
Several M2 Macs are in the works
Here are the different Macs being tested, along with details for the different M2 chips:
- A MacBook Air which is codenamed J413 and has the M2 chip. There are 8 cores for the CPU (processor) and 10 cores for the GPU (graphics).
- A Mac mini which has the code name J473 and embeds the M2 chip. A J474 model is entitled to the M2 Pro chip.
- An entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro codenamed J493 and the M2 chip.
- A 14-inch MacBook Pro (J414) with the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. The latter would offer 12 cores for the CPU, 38 cores for the GPU and 64 GB of RAM.
- A 16-inch MacBook Pro (J416) with the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips again
- A Mac Pro codenamed J180 and a chip succeeding the M1 Ultra (M2 Ultra or another model?).
We can highlight a notable absentee from the list: the iMac. Will Apple continue this range? Or will the manufacturer push its customers to take the Mac Studio (or Mac mini) + Studio Display combo?
In addition, Apple is testing a new Mac mini which is codenamed J374 and which embeds the M1 Pro chip. There was also a test with the M1 Max chip, but it is possible that Apple will not release this Mac mini, knowing that it could duplicate the Mac Studio.
According to previous leaks, Apple will release a new MacBook Air, entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro, Mac Pro, Mac mini, and potentially new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros this year. Recently, Bloomberg reported that there will be at least two new Macs at WWDC in June.
