Shot on iPhone: macro photography
Two years ago, Apple already asked its users to share the best photos for the night mode. This year’s ‘Shot on iPhone Challenge’ focuses on macro photography.
Starting today, Apple is inviting photographers – both amateurs and professionals – from around the world to participate in the Shot on iPhone Challenge with their macro photos. These must have been made with the iPhone 13 Pro or iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Why macro photography? The iPhone 13 Pro family has the most advanced camera system yet in an iPhone, and for the first time, your iPhone can take sharp, stunning close-ups of subjects less than two inches away. This new macro mode is therefore a good reason for a new photo competition.
This is how you participate in the challenge
To celebrate macro photography, Apple is inviting people to share their best macro photos taken with iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max on Instagram and Twitter. The competition will run until February 17, 2022, with winners to be announced in April.
A jury of five professional photographers and five Apple employees selects the ten winning photos. Winners’ photos will be featured in a gallery on Apple Newsroom, apple.com, Apple Instagram (@apple) and other official Apple accounts, and may also be featured in digital campaigns, Apple Stores, posters or a public photo exhibition.
Participate in your macro photos
To enter, select the best macro photos you’ve taken with your iPhone 13 Pro or iPhone 13 Pro Max and share them on Instagram and Twitter using the hashtags #ShotoniPhone and #iPhonemacrochallenge.
State in the caption with which model iPhone the photo was taken. You can also email your photos to shotoniphone@apple.com using the filename “firstname_lastname_iPhone-model.”
Send the photos in the highest resolution. Finally, put this text in the subject line: “Shot on iPhone Macro Challenge Submission.” You can enter with photos straight from the camera app, photos edited with tools in the Photos app, or photos edited with third-party apps. You can participate from now until February 16, 2022. The winners will be notified on April 12, 2022.
Tips for macro photography with iPhone 13 Pro
In a macro photo, the most mundane things become very special. Think of a hairbrush, food, pets or something in nature, such as snow, ice, feathers, flowers or insects. Macro photography makes ordinary things very special. Below we have collected some tips for you.
- Try to get as close to your subject as possible. You can hold the camera up to 2 cm.
- Place the focus point in the center of your frame so that that part is captured the sharpest when taking your macro photo.
- Tap anywhere in the viewfinder to set a specific focus point.
- Choose 0.5x for ultra-wide angle. Or try 1x if you want a tighter frame. iPhone does switch cameras automatically when you get closer to your subject, but the 1x frame remains as it is.
