Apple is lagging with its subscription-based iPhone purchase system

For a while now, Apple has been preparing a purchasing system that will allow you to have an iPhone, iPad or Mac through a subscription. But according to Mark Gurman of Bloombergthis system is lagging behind.

The subscription program for the iPhone should have launched alongside the iPhone 13 in 2021 or the iPhone 14 in 2022. But not everything goes to plan and it has suffered technical and engineering setbacks which led to slow progress and missed deadlines. However, the project is not abandoned, it is still in preparation at Apple.

The program will be different from other financing options for iPhone buyers because the monthly cost will not be the price of the device spread over 12 or 24 months. It would rather be a monthly fee to be determined which depends on the device chosen by the user. Apple has yet to publicly announce this service.

It is a system presented as ambitious because Apple wants to use its own platform to manage all the financial part, rather than relying on a third-party partner (such as a financial group). The name is Project Breakout internally, with Apple wanting to handle transaction checks, approvals, and histories.

There is currently no new date for the arrival of the subscription program for the iPhone. Conversely, it’s a little more specific for Apple Pay Later, the service that will split a purchase into four equal payments over six weeks, without interest or other fees. Tim Cook, the boss of Apple, recently mentioned an arrival for “soon”. Today, we learn that it would be for March or April (of the month in the United States).
