‘iPhone 13 may get a fingerprint scanner’

The iPhone 13 may get a fingerprint scanner under the screen. That’s what the usually informed tech journalist Mark Gurman prescribes Bloomberg. The business magazine reports that Apple wants to use this new version of Touch ID as an addition to Face ID. Thus, users would get an extra way to unlock their iPhone.

There have been rumors for years that Apple is working on the return of Touch ID on the iPhone. These have been swelling even more recently. Jon Prosser also reported in December that Apple has prototypes of the iPhone 13 with a fingerprint scanner under the screen.

Many Android smartphones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S21, already have a fingerprint scanner under the display. Apple has been betting on Face ID to unlock the iPhone since the iPhone X. Now that many people wear mouth masks because of the corona crisis, facial recognition is not always very practical. Going back to Touch ID would therefore be a logical choice.

Bloomberg further writes that Apple views the new iPhone as an ‘S’ model. That means that relatively little will change in the design. A fingerprint scanner may even be the only major innovation of the iPhone 13 compared to the iPhone 12. Apple could therefore also release the smartphone as the iPhone 12S.

‘Apple is also working on a foldable iPhone’

Gurman also says that Apple is working on a foldable iPhone, which you can fold open into a small tablet. That device should compete with smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2. This model has also been rumored for years, but Gurman writes that Apple does not yet have a functioning prototype. It is therefore not clear whether and when we can expect such a foldable iPhone.
