Apple is about to abandon “Hey Siri”
For a while now, the phrase “Hey Siri” has been used to activate Apple’s assistant. Then just make your request. But “Hey Siri” should disappear and Apple’s announcement would come during WWDC 2023.
According Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple should take advantage of the opening keynote of WWDC 2023 – which will take place on June 5 – to announce the end of “Hey Siri”. Who would be the replacement? Just say “Siri” to activate the personal assistant.
Gurman previously touched on the subject last November, explaining that switching from “Hey Siri” to “Siri” may seem simple on the surface. And yet, it takes a lot of work for Apple behind the scenes, especially to manage the different accents. Another difficulty is that the word is very short, so the iPhone must be able to quickly detect it during a sentence. Saying “Hey Siri” makes it a little easier.
This change would bring Siri closer to Amazon’s voice assistant, which can be triggered simply by initiating the Alexa command.
It was initially rumored that this change to activate Apple’s assistant would take place sometime in 2023 or 2024. In view of Gurman’s message today, it will obviously be for this year. At least the presentation, there remains the possibility that Apple will wait until next year to make the change to all users.
It remains to be seen now whether Siri will be entitled to other new features at WWDC. The simple fact of removing the word “Say” would be more than light, especially when we know that generative artificial intelligence, like ChatGPT, is giving a serious blow to classic personal assistants.
