Apple hit the nail on the head with its Vision Pro headset, says Oculus co-founder
The Apple Vision Pro appeals to some people and one of them is Palmer Luckey, the co-founder of Oculus. According to him, Apple got it right with its product, on several levels.
Palmer Luckey likes the Apple Vision Pro
First is the battery. Apple has chosen to offer an external battery that allows the Vision Pro to be used for two hours. Palmer Luckey explain that he himself wanted to offer an external battery with Oculus headsets:
To be clear, this is the right way to do things. And I was a strong advocate for that at Oculus. Unfortunately, it was a battle I lost in my later years. And they went out of their way to put all the batteries, all the processing in the headset itself, and not just in the headset, but in the front of the headset itself.
Palmer Luckey fears that Apple will follow the same path in the future in order to create a product presented as being more elegant. But he judges that this is not necessarily the best option, since it adds weight to the helmet.
Another element is the price. Apple will offer the Vision Pro for $3,499. For the co-founder of Oculus, this is a good price positioning:
I think if Apple had tried to go after the entry level of the market, it would have been a mistake. They take exactly the approach that I always wanted Apple to take and, in fact, the approach that Oculus took in the early years.
When Apple launched the Vision Pro, I retweeted one of my own tweets from 2015, in which I said that before virtual reality becomes something everyone can afford, it has to become something something everyone wants, and I think that’s the approach Apple is taking.
Apple will begin shipping its headphones in early 2024, starting in the United States. It will then be available in other countries, but neither the list of the countries in question nor the price in euros.
