Apple didn’t mention these new iPhone features at WWDC
While Apple’s Vision Pro was the star of Monday’s WWDC keynote, the headset will not land in Germany until further notice. However, the group will release the next major operating system updates in the fall, which were also part of the show. The update to iOS 17 brings with it numerous “nice-to-have” features, many of which Apple also presented during the keynote.
Due to the tight schedule, Apple was unable to mention many of the new iOS features on stage. We have for you an overview of the features that did not make it into the keynote.
The highlight of iOS 16 in the form of the clipping function receives an update with iOS 17. Objects can now not only be cut out of images and videos, but they can also be edited later with predefined functions and provided with a comic filter, for example.
Furthermore, users can “look up” these objects to get more information about them.
With iOS 17, Apple is expanding computer vision capabilities and introducing recipe search. Users can then, for example, tap a dish on an image and search for similar recipes.
The Photos app will also recognize your pets, such as cats and dogs, and place them in the “People” section.
The Freeform app introduced with iOS 16 also gets new drawing tools: They include a watercolor brush, a calligraphy pen, as well as a highlighter, a pen with variable width and a ruler.
Additionally, with iOS 17, Apple is expanding the “nudity filter” for “nude photos and videos showing private parts of the body normally covered by underwear or swimsuits,” according to the company.
This is important to prevent unwanted nude images from being displayed. Instead of the image, users see a pop-up asking if they want to see the photo.
In addition to the option to view or reject the image, users can also tap “Ways to get help.” It is not yet clear what exactly is behind this and who Apple is bringing on board as a partner for this option.
The feature will be available across the system, according to Apple. It includes content received via Airdrop, the system-wide photo picker, Facetime messages, contact posters in the phone app, and third-party apps.
Reminders: Grocery shopping lists automatically sort items into categories to make shopping easier. You can also customize how the items are grouped; the list remembers your settings. The Reminders app will also be able to change groups and display items in a columnar, kanban-like format.
The Notes app will also show PDFs and scans of presentations, assignments, research papers and more in the future. They can be marked directly in it and provided with links to link related notes. Apple cites travel routes or a list of recommended restaurants as examples.
Practical: With iOS 17, the Mail app supports the automatic filling in of one-time verification codes. Until now, only the Messages app could do this. In addition, you can now activate the automatic deletion of e-mails and messages with verification codes in the password settings after they have been entered via autofill.
As with iPadOS 17, the way PDFs are handled is becoming smarter. iOS 17 gets a PDF autofill feature. This makes it possible to fill out contact fields with your saved information in no time at all.
Apple Music is getting a shared playlist feature that lets you create a list together with your friends. Friends can also react to songs in the playback queue in Shareplay. The company is also introducing a fade option in the Music app.
- A new pronoun field is moving in for your contacts in the People app.
- It is finally possible to set and manage multiple timers.
- Just like iPadOS 17, iOS 17 gets interactive widgets. With it, you can control music or mark a task as done without having to open an app.
- The Health app in iOS 17 will now show a summary of your friends’ training successes. These include series and awards.
- Users can create an individual plan for meditation and training under Apple Fitness Plus.
- The Spotlight search makes it possible to change system settings such as WLAN directly via the search.
- In the new weather app you can now see the weather of the previous day. So far this has not been possible.
-
Homekit: With the new activity history you can see who locked or unlocked the doors – and when. The feature also displays recent activity for garage doors, contact sensors, and your security system.
- New Apple ID feature: You can now securely sign in to your iPhone using a nearby device or any email address or phone number listed on your account.
- In addition, iPhones get the new Memoji: Halo, Smirk and Peekaboo.
iOS 17 will be released in the final version in the course of autumn. So far, a first preview is available for developers to install. A public beta is scheduled for release in July.
