Apple cancels Mac Pro with M2 Extreme – this version will come

The Mac Pro with an M2 Extreme chip appears to be discontinued, but Apple is already working on another Mac Pro. Read here what the plans are!

Read on after the ad.

New Mac Pro with an M2 Extreme chip

Apple has been working for some time on a Mac Pro with an improved M2 chip, also called the M2 Extreme. A Mac Pro with this powerful chip would have a 48-core CPU and a 152-core GPU. Apple has now permanently scrapped this plan, as the production costs are too expensive to market the product to the general public.

The production of the Mac Pro with an M2 Extreme chip would cost at least $ 10,000. This makes it an extremely expensive product that only appeals to a small target group. This high production price is therefore probably not in proportion to how often such an expensive Mac Pro will be sold. For Apple, therefore, too high a cost to continue the project.

New project: Mac Pro with the M2 Ultra chip

Meanwhile, according to Apple analyst Mark Gurman, Apple will continue to conduct tests with the M2 Ultra chip. The Mac Pro with this chip has a 24-core CPU and a 76-core GPU with at least 192GB of RAM. It is also expected that the new Mac Pro with the M2 Ultra chip can be expanded with more storage space, RAM and other aspects.

The Ultra chip is therefore the slightly less powerful version of the M2 Extreme chip, which means that it is also probably cheaper to produce. This makes it attractive for Apple to produce a Mac Pro with this chip.

Last Mac Pro released in 2019

In 2019, Apple released one of the biggest updates to the Mac Pro. The new powerhouse harked back to the design of the past, but inside it was one of the fastest computers at the time. With a RAM of 384GB, the device can still run the most demanding programs.

The Mac Pro from 2019 is now for sale at Apple for 6,499.10 euros. Nothing is known about the price of the new Mac Pro, but it is certain that it will be a pricey (but powerful) computer.
