Jony Ive finally left Apple

Jony Ive is one of the most influential designers in the tech industry, becoming famous for his work on iconic designs, including iMacs, iPhones, MacBooks and iPods. Ive left Apple three years ago, but he remained involved as a consultant with his company LoveFrom.

For Jony Ive a lucrative collaboration, because the deal involved 100 million dollars. One condition was that Ive was not allowed to take on work that Apple found competitive, reports The New York Times

A few weeks ago, Apple and Ive were about to extend the collaboration, the American newspaper knows. However, some executives at the tech giant questioned the huge sum of money Apple paid to Ive. She was also frustrated that a number of designers left Apple to join Ive’s company.

Function over design

After three years, the collaboration between Apple and Jony Ive seems to be coming to an end, both of whom do not want to respond to the reports. Incidentally, Ive’s hand was no longer so visible. Since the CEO’s departure, Apple has again preferred function to design.

The MacBook is a striking example of this. Under the leadership of design chief Ive, the notebook kept getting thinner and thinner. Even the USB-A, Ethernet and HDMI connections had to make way for a more aesthetic design. Apple has come back to this, because with the MacBook Pro 2021 the device became thicker again and some popular ports are back.

What Ive has been doing for Apple with his company LoveFrom over the past three years is not entirely clear. He does seem to have an important part in the new CarPlay design. He has also reportedly been committed to the future Apple Glass. Ive will continue to work with Airbnb and Ferrari.
