‘Apparently football has also become my new hobby’

When parent participation at your local sports club turns into a true part-time job, you start to ask yourself: when did this become my new hobby too?

Lea (31), mother of Oscar (7):

“It is officially called parent participation. According to my husband, we signed for it when we made our son a member of the football club.

Did we know how much work it was: inflating balls, setting out goals, collecting pawns, washing uniforms and then also working bar shifts, picking up and dropping off the children and manning the call team to recruit new members for a sponsor campaign. Plus all training sessions and (practice) parties. Apparently football has also become my new hobby, I no longer have time for my own boot camp club. Well, anything for the blood then, eh? Luckily we only have one.”

No ball on

Miranda (29), mother of Jasmijn (9):

“I admit it frankly: I have nothing to do with football and not at all with team sports. I am a Penny girl. Nice brushing and cuddling horses and the occasional ride, without any pressure to perform. I am very sorry that our only daughter has nothing to do with horses and wants to play soccer. And then also blood fanatic.

My husband is Jasmijn’s biggest supporter, but I’ve honestly never been to a training or match. I don’t care about the game and then those screaming parents along the line: terrible. I know that there is a lot of gossip about me, I would be degenerate because I never come to watch. Well, I do crafts with Jasmijn and do a lot at school. To each his own, right?”
