‘And then I turned out to be pregnant…’
When it came out that Fenna’s sweetheart was cheating, her whole vision of the future collapsed. And things got even worse when she found out a few days later that she was pregnant.
Fenna (35), mother of David (6):
“I should have known better. Frank’s relationship with me was never good. We often argued about trivial things, such as money; then he wouldn’t pay for the food for my dog. And he never made me feel like we were really together. I noticed that he often looked at other women. Frank did that openly, he just barely pulled his neck. That’s exactly why I thought he wasn’t a sneaky one. So I was right next to that.
Premonition
Frank and I wanted to have children, so I went off the pill. We also bought a bigger house. We had already signed and almost got the key. One afternoon Frank went shopping and forgot to bring his phone. Never before had I done anything like this, but it was then that I was prompted to look into his phone. No idea why, there was no reason, no premonition.
“In a daze I called the number”
But I did, and then read a message that came in at that moment: “If you come like this, I’ll be upstairs already.” The blood drained from my face. There was no name and I had to know who this was. I called the number in a daze. She answered and said a name I recognized immediately. It was Sascha, Frank’s colleague. I once spoke to her at a company party. I fell through the ground. She knew me well, she knew Frank was in a relationship. How could she do such a thing? But my greatest anger was of course directed at Frank.
Affair
When he got home, I confronted him right away. I furiously asked him what all this meant. Frank couldn’t help but admit that he was having an affair with her. In doing so, he showed no remorse, seemed to care little. He chose her, he made that clear right away. I didn’t understand it at all. How could he buy a house and want to have children with me and be busy with someone else at the same time?
The chaos grew even more when I found out a few days later that I was pregnant. I immediately felt that abortion was not an option, this child was wanted anyway and would come. I shot into control mode. So I made sure that Sascha bought my share in the new house. She and Frank immediately moved in together in a house where I had wanted to start my family. My whole vision of the future went up in smoke.

on my own
The pregnancy was quite lonely. Instead of furnishing a nice little room in the new house, I lived in my brother’s converted garage where I put a crib next to my bed. My mother went with me to all ultrasounds and to the puff course. Quite confronting, between all those expectant mothers who were sitting there happily with their partner. Frank was at the birth, I thought that was important.
“’The other woman’ took care of my baby, and I had to accept that”
But for the postpartum period, including colic, feedings and broken nights, I was on my own. That was tough, I had no one to consult with if I was unsure whether David was drinking enough. Luckily he was an easy baby and I quickly found my way as a single mom. I never wanted to deny David contact with his father. The first two years he regularly went to Frank and Sascha’s for a weekend. So ‘The other woman’ took care of my baby, and I had to accept that, no matter how difficult it was.
The other woman
I have to say: Sascha was nice to David and in the end we had quite a nice band. She had a daughter with Frank and was happy with him until he cheated on her with another. Frank has now started his third family. Unfortunately, his interest in David has also diminished, nowadays they only see each other occasionally.
“Frank has now started his third family”
After Frank I had another relationship, but I am currently single again. My faith in men has not been overly damaged in spite of everything. There are still good, loyal guys out there, I’m sure of that.”
