Read on after the ad.

Apple launches emergency calling via satellite

Apple introduced the new satellite function with the iPhone 14. The feature makes it possible to share a short message with your location to your emergency contacts, even if you are not near a telephone mast. Your location will then be visible in the ‘Find My’ app. At the moment, the satellite function is still limited to emergency calls, but this may be expanded with the iPhone 15.

According to new rumors, you will soon be able to use the satellite function to connect to the internet. With the iPhone 15 you are no longer dependent on WiFi or mobile coverage for the internet, because you have a much greater range via satellite. Very handy of course, especially in (foreign) areas with little mobile coverage.

It seems more and more likely that more satellite functions will come to the iPhone, because Globalstar itself has hinted at new options. For the satellite connection, Apple is working with Globalstar, which currently has 24 satellites orbiting the Earth. If you want to make an emergency call via your iPhone without mobile coverage, connect to one of these 24 satellites.

Apple invested a whopping $450 million in Globalstar for the new feature. It is therefore to be expected that it will not stop at the SOS emergency function. With Globalstar itself referring to new satellite features, that may mean the iPhone 15 can connect to the internet via satellite. That would be a huge improvement, because with the new iPhone you will never be without range again.

Satellite function does not remain free

The big question is how much the satellite function will ultimately cost. According to Apple, the feature is free for the first two years. It is not yet known how much you will have to pay for the service afterwards. If the iPhone 15 can indeed connect to the internet via satellite, it’s quite possible that the service will come at a decent price. It therefore remains to be seen how accessible the service will be.

It is not expected that the new satellite function will be available immediately with the release of the iPhone 15. The SOS function only came to the Netherlands with the iPhone 14 a few months later and is still not available in all (European) countries. That is why the new Internet connection via satellite will probably take some time to come.
