All our expectations regarding the camera of the iPhone 14 at a glance

In less than five months, Apple will announce the iPhone 14. We tell you what to expect from the camera of the iPhone 14 series.

Read on after the ad.

The camera of the iPhone 14: this is what we expect

Apple will be back in September with four brand new iPhones. These are expected to be the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. We already know a thing or two about the devices. For example, the Pro variants make short work of the controversial notch and the regular iPhone 14 smartphones get the same A15 chip as the iPhone 13.

For many people, a good camera is the reason to buy a new phone. Are you curious about our expectations regarding the camera of the iPhone 14 series? Then read on quickly!

iPhone 14 Pro gets 48 megapixel sensor

The iPhone’s camera has been equipped with a 12-megapixel sensor since 2015. That doesn’t mean iPhone cameras haven’t improved since then — quite the opposite, in fact. Apple made huge improvements in dynamic range, detail and color. The number of megapixels of a camera does not say everything, but it is important.

If the rumors are correct, the new camera of the iPhone 14 Pro will have a resolution of no less than 48 megapixels. That means that the number of megapixels has quadrupled compared to the iPhone 13 Pro. Chances are, however, that the photos themselves will not increase in size. That’s because Apple will likely bet on pixel binning-technology. Many Android smartphones also make use of this.

Of pixel binning several small pixels are merged into one large pixel. As a result, the pixels per merged pixel let in much more light. This provides more details and clear images. The final photos have thanks to the pixel binningtechnology probably still has a resolution of about 12 megapixels.

The regular iPhone 14 devices reportedly retain the same 12 megapixel cameras as the iPhone 13. These take beautiful photos, so it’s not such a disaster. For the sharpest, clearest photos, however, it is better to choose a Pro device.

FaceTime

Much better selfie camera

Do you take a lot of selfies or are you a real FaceTime enthusiast? Then we have good news, because the camera on the front of the iPhone 14 is also getting a major upgrade. According to well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the renewed selfie camera finally has support for autofocus. The selfie cameras of all older iPhones still have a so-called fixed focusso you can’t focus manually.

The new selfie camera also gets a larger aperture of f/1.9. This allows the sensor to let in much more light compared to the iPhone 13, which has a selfie camera with an aperture of f/2.2. Selfies in poor lighting conditions are therefore expected to look a lot better on the iPhone 14.

New camera features, including astrophotography

With almost every new iPhone release, Apple also announces a special camera feature. Last year it was Movie mode, a kind of portrait mode for videos. It allows iPhone 13 users to add a nice depth of field to their videos. The background then becomes blurred, while the subject remains in focus.

We expect that the camera in the iPhone 14 will also bring a new feature. There have been rumors for years about an iPhone with astrophotography. It allows users to capture the starry night sky. Who knows, the iPhone 14 may finally be the iPhone that brings this feature to life.

More about the Apple iPhone 14

Apple is likely to announce the new iPhones in September. The manufacturer is expected to come with the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro, which will again have a 6.1-inch screen. We also expect an iPhone 14 Max and 14 Pro Max with a 6.7-inch screen. What is missing in this setup? Right, the iPhone 14 mini. It will be replaced by the 14 Max. That’s because the iPhone 13 mini is selling very poorly.
