1. Design: Familiar and New
When you look at the iPad 2021, you probably don’t immediately see that you are dealing with a new version. The iPad 2021 still has the familiar look. So the home button with Touch ID is still there and it also has quite wide bezels. The iPad 2021 is available in space gray and silver.
With the iPad mini 2021 you immediately see that you are holding a new version in your hands. The edges are narrower and the home button is no longer there. Touch ID is still there, but it’s in the on/off button, just like with the iPad Air from 2020. So you unlock the new iPad mini by placing your finger on the button. The mini is also available in the colors: space gray, pink, purple and starlight.
2. Processor: fast and even faster
The ninth generation iPad has an A13 Bionic chip, which you may remember from the iPhone 11 (Pro) and iPhone SE. According to Apple, the processor makes the iPad 2021 about twenty percent faster than the iPad 2020. The chip is also more energy-efficient.
The iPad mini 2021 has more power at home. The new compact tablet has the same A15 processor as the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro. That is striking, because its predecessors all lagged behind the iPhones in terms of chips. According to Apple, the 2021 iPad mini is about 40 percent faster than its predecessor.
3. Screen and Camera
The 2021 iPad has a 10.2-inch screen and the resolution is still the same (2160 x 1620). It’s a Retina display with True Tone. With True Tone, the image is matched to the color temperature of the room. This makes images look more natural and the viewing experience is better in any light.
The screen of the iPad mini 2021 is 8.3 inches and also has True Tone. The resolution is about the same as the iPad 2021 (2266 x 1488).
Both the iPad mini 2021 and the iPad 2021 have Center Stage (center stage). This function is ideal for video calling. Center Stage keeps you in view, even when you walk through the room, for example.

The new iPad mini supports the second-generation Apple Pencil. You can click the Apple Pencil 2 on the side of the tablet to charge the pen. The iPad 2021 only has support for the Apple Pencil 1. To charge it, plug the pen into the Lightning connector.
