Aldi is completely changing how you pay at the checkout
Aldi Süd is showing great interest in a new technology that not only gives the company an advantage, but would also save many customers waiting at the checkout. It’s about scan and go.
Aldi Süd wants to introduce Scan&Go
Who doesn’t know them, the self-service checkouts. You scan your purchase yourself, pay at the machine and don’t have to wait. Aldi doesn’t have this service yet, but that’s about to change (source: food newspaper). The discounter is very interested in Scan&Go technology. In contrast to other self-scanning technologies, Aldi does not have to invest in hardware here. The customers use simply a special app and their own smartphone, which they have with them anyway.
In Switzerland, Aldi has already tested the Scan&Go technology in 20 branches. The number should keep increasing. Soon Aldi Süd could also start with it in Germany. If the self-scanning option is created, Purchasing works as follows:
- Open the Aldi smartphone app
- Scan the barcode of the products with the app
- Put the product in the shopping cart or your own shopping bag
- Pay for all purchases at a counter by scanning a QR code displayed in the app
So Aldi could introduce one of the simplest solutions for self-scanning shopping, making long waits at the checkout unnecessary. That would certainly be a great relief for all customers. At the same time, the normal coffers would be relieved.
What you need to know about Aldi:
There are other technologies too
Aldi Süd is more of a late bloomer. Other companies such as Netto, Rewe, Marktkauf or Kaufland have been offering these or similar Scan&Go technologies for some time. Either via an app, a special scanner that you take with you at the entrance, or a special shopping cart that has a corresponding terminal on board. People are also very responsive to the new technologies, as many save time with them. So it’s really about time that Aldi also offered Scan&Go.
