AirPods will soon be able to do much more with iOS 17 (but there is also a disadvantage)

AirPods get new feature in iOS 17

At WWDC 2023, Apple announced iOS 17 as expected. The update brings many improvements to your iPhone, such as the completely new Stand-by mode is introduced and the Journal app comes to your phone. Apps such as Phone, FaceTime and Messages are also being overhauled in iOS 17.

So many new features are coming to your iPhone, but that’s not the only thing. Apple has also announced new features for the AirPods. iOS 17 launches a completely new listening mode: adaptive audio. In addition, the AirPods get to know your personal preferences on the basis of machine learning. These features make your AirPods even better in iOS 17!

1. New Listening Mode: Adaptive Audio

Adaptive Audio is a new listening mode for the AirPods Pro. The function adjusts the noise reduction of the AirPods to the amount of noise in your environment. If you’re in a noisy room, the adaptive audio ensures that noise reduction blocks more sound.

This happens automatically, so you don’t have to constantly switch between transparency mode and noise reduction. This way you can enjoy the best sound in every environment, very handy in the train or at the office, for example. The AirPods then automatically recognize a loud environment.

2. Personalized volume as a new feature in iOS 17

Apple has also announced that the machine learning commitment to the new features of the AirPods in iOS 17. To improve personal audio, Apple has come up with Personalized Volume. With this improvement, your AirPods learn from your environmental conditions and your listening preferences. This way, the earphones will soon know exactly which volume you find most comfortable in certain circumstances.

3. Apple introduces Conversation Detection for AirPods

Perhaps the most useful feature coming to your AirPods in iOS 17: Conversation Detection. This mode automatically lowers the volume of your AirPods when you start a call. Your earphones will then recognize when someone is talking to you, even with noise reduction switched on. If someone speaks to you, the voice is amplified, so that you hear it immediately.

That does not mean that noise reduction is immediately switched off as soon as someone talks to you. The voices are clearly picked up by the earphones with Conversation Detection, but annoying background noises are still filtered out. This way you can hear the conversation clearly and without distracting sounds. Super handy, because that way you no longer accidentally ignore anyone with noise reduction switched on.

Now the bad news. The aforementioned features are only coming to the second-generation AirPods Pro. All other AirPods will only get “device switching improvements.”
