AI painting wins art competition – and causes heated discussions
An AI-generated painting won first place in an art competition in the United States. And that sparked heated debates online.
Is it also art when a work was created by an artificial intelligence? The Colorado State Fair judges answered yes to that question. An AI-generated image won first place in an art competition there.
The contribution entitled “Théâtre D’opéra Spatial” was submitted by Jason Allen in the category “Digital Arts/ Digitally Manipulated Photography”. And the fact that the picture won first place caused concern Twitter for heated discussions.
TL;DR — Someone entered an art competition with an AI-generated piece and won the first prize.

AI artwork is the death of the creative professions
center of criticism is that Allen didn’t create the picture himself. Instead, it was created by the AI image generator Midjourney. The text-to-image software recognizes text input and converts it into images.
This is how the AI created the winning image of the art competition in Colorado. The painting shows a futuristic-looking scene in which some female figures in pompous robes look through a circular opening at a brightly lit landscape.
Artists and art lovers are now accusing laureate Jason Allen online of hastening the death of the creative professions.
If creative professions are not safe from humans, then even highly skilled professions run the risk of becoming obsolete.
AI image does not break any art contest rules
Allen, in turn, commented on the criticism on the Midjourney Discord server. He knew the action would be controversial. However, he describes the discussions on Twitter as hypocritical. In doing so, he refers to the work that he himself has put into refining the AI image.
I’ve been researching a special prompt that I’ll post at a later date. I’ve created hundreds of images with it and after many weeks of fine-tuning and curating my gens, I’ve selected my top 3 and had them printed on canvas after detaching them using Gigapixel AI.
The Colorado State Fair has now confirmed various media reports that Allen broke no rules when he submitted the AI painting to the art competition.
Allen received $300 in prize money for first place. He now wants to sell the canvas for $750.
