AI issues speeding tickets and criminals use ChatGPT

We hope you had a good day and now we want to give you some exciting information to take with you into the evening. t3n Daily is also available as a podcast and as a newsletter. Here are the topics of the day.

The Hessian company Parkvision has developed a system that uses AI to keep supermarket parking lots free of illegally parked vehicles. The product is already being used in a branch in Gelsenkirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia. Cameras capture the facial data of people who have parked their cars in the customer parking lot and then match it with footage from inside the store. In this way it can be determined whether the people parked are actually shopping in the shop. If this is not the case, the program automatically issues a fine of 40 euros to the vehicle owner.

Critics complain about the biometrics-based procedure for data protection reasons. In addition, one cannot say with certainty whether people wearing FFP2 masks or companions who do the shopping will be recognized by the AI. The Hessian data protection authority was therefore involved.

Microsoft Teams with 50 new features

The new version of Microsoft Teams for corporate customers is now available in preview mode. It looks like the cooperation and communication tool has been fundamentally revised. Teams now has around 50 new functions. Microsoft attaches particular importance to improving speed, performance, flexibility and intelligence. Joining a meeting, for example, should already be twice as fast and only use half as much memory as with the old team.

A special innovation will also be the integration of the AI Copilot. This assistance software provides, among other things, text templates for everyday office life, which only need to be revised and adjusted slightly. As part of teams, the program should also brief users before a meeting so that they can participate with the latest information.

Productivity tip for annoying tasks

San Francisco copywriter Laur Wheeler went viral with a productivity tip on Tiktok. The principle of the “Scary Hour” is intended to help you get rid of unpleasant tasks so that they don’t build up and become even more difficult to manage. That’s why Wheeler recommends setting aside exactly 60 minutes first thing in the morning to do the things you most want to put off. When the scary hour timer is up, stop and don’t bother with it for the rest of the day. In this way, tiresome tasks such as tax returns gradually disappear from the to-do list, you have small success stories and your head is free for the rest of the day.

Criminal use of ChatGPT

As a Europol report shows, ChatGPT is already being used in many criminal activities. For example, if the filter mechanisms are circumvented, the program can provide step-by-step instructions for committing certain crimes. Although instructions for offenses such as building bombs and making crack can be found online anyway, the AI chatbot can make research much easier.

The program can also significantly improve the language quality of phishing emails, making them more effective. Other criminal uses include disinformation, propaganda and deepfakes. The experts assume that there will soon be AI specially trained for criminal purposes on the dark web.

Possible Tiktok ban in the US

After the testimony of Tiktok CEO Shou Zi Chew before the US Congress, experts assume that a ban on the social network in the United States has become very likely. There they fear that user data collected via the parent company Bytedance will reach China. Because the CEO has dodged many questions about it, Wedbush analyst Dan Ives, for example, believes that there is a 90 percent chance that Tiktok will be banned if Bytedance doesn’t spin off and sell it.

Data protectionists criticize the blocking of individual apps and applications in certain countries and call for a fundamental rethinking of data collection instead of a fragmented Internet.

If Tiktok is actually banned, the measure could come into force as early as the end of 2023.
