‘After work I take the scenic route home for some time for myself’

Close the tent early on Friday afternoon or stay longer to ‘avoid the traffic jam’. These parents have developed a lot of clever tricks to create some extra time for themselves.

Monica (33): “Of course there are hardly any traffic jams between Markelo and Vriezenveen. The ride home from work takes no more than ten minutes during rush hour. Still, on my two working days I always drive ‘after the traffic jam’, and wait until half past six to leave. I have a nice hour to myself to shop online, text with friends or drink a glass of wine with a colleague. By the time I get home, the kids are in bed and my husband is behind the pans. Well organized, I thought.”

Close the tent

Debbie (36): “At work I close the tent after the Friday afternoon drink. It’s the only day my husband is home with our kids; the other days he is only there when they are already asleep. I stretch that time for myself as long as I can: if my colleagues throw themselves into the bottle after one glass of wine, I’ll have another one. That guy of mine will be fine.”

Someone has to do it

Ron (39): “It is not really necessary that I visit my mother twice a week after work. But she is old and lives alone; someone needs to keep an eye on her. Once home, all I have to do is kiss my children goodnight and enjoy a peaceful meal with my wife without the hassle of children.”

Continue working

Nadine (43): “After half past five I call a few more people and update my email. Then I have the office wonderfully to myself and the children are at home with dad. I only have to join the set table when I get home around half past six.”

Tourist route

Bibi (35): “I take the scenic route home after work. Windows open, music loud, enjoying time for myself. And the wonderful prospect that the children will have already eaten and showered by the time I get home. And then I text my friend: ‘Still behind the wheel, will you put the white wine cold?’
