After update it’s “strange and ugly”

Did this update fail? Some Apple Watch users are reporting an unusual and rather annoying change on the smartwatch screen after the recent update to watchOS 9.5.

Anyone who owns an Apple Watch recently got the update to watchOS 9.5. However, this seems to be responsible for an annoying problem. This is how users of Apple’s Smartwatch report after the update of a unusual green cast on the display. Such complaints are currently piling up on Reddit and the MacRumors forum (source: MacRumors).

Apple Watch gets ugly green tint after update

However, the mentioned green tint, which some users perceive as a kind of gray veil, is disappearing only at certain moments over the screen. Specifically, the phenomenon shows up on the passcode entry screen, when accessing the control center, and when calling up notifications on the watch.

The users of the Apple Watch don’t like this at all, the green tint is mostly referred to as “strange and ugly”.. In any case, inappropriate and unflattering to the watch. For example, one user describes the color change as a kind of “washed out LCD screen”. Completely different from the pure OLED black that he was used to from his watch.

According to reports mainly models of the Apple Watch Series 8 and older are affected. Owners of an Apple Watch SE and an Apple Watch Ultra probably have fewer problems.

From the current portfolio, it primarily affects the Apple Watch 8:

Correction expected in the form of another update

It’s not yet clear what causes the color change, but a Software problem is considered very likely. Accordingly, Apple could fix this with another update. Perhaps this will come before watchOS 9.6, which is currently in development and is likely expected sometime in July.

Still, some users were able to fix the color cast after a restart, but others didn’t have the same success. So this tip is not reliable.

Worth mentioning: The iPhone has also struggled with color changes on the display after an update in the past. A corresponding software update later helped here as well.

Speaking of iPhones. After the update to iOS 16.5, this has completely different problems, as we recently reported. Here, too, Apple is forced to make improvements.
