ADAC reveals the Achilles heel of Stromer

E-cars are no longer a rare sight on German roads. Since the breakdown operations at the ADAC are more frequent. Four models with rechargeable batteries made it into the official evaluation. The comparison with combustion engines shows what e-car drivers are getting into.

Breakdowns in e-cars: This component causes the most trouble

When it comes to the life cycle assessment, e-cars have the edge – at least after a while. However, a look at the ADAC breakdown statistics for 2022 shows that combustion engines and electric cars don’t take much from each other when they break down. At both drive types came the breakdown helpers most commonly due to problems with the starter battery out of.

At 43.3 percent, the 12-V battery accounts for by far the largest share of the total number of breakdowns. After all, 17.4 percent of the breakdowns affected the Engine category – here the ADAC has one Advantage for electric cars established:

As the comparison shows, e-cars come off much better for every 1,000 breakdowns in the 2020 year. 0.2 breakdowns per 1,000 electric vehicles in the category “Engine, engine management, high-voltage system” compared to 1.3 breakdowns in cars with combustion engines. The reason for this is the simpler design of electric motors.

According to ADAC Overall, combustion engines perform worse when it comes to punctures. The experts attribute this to the higher mileage. Because of the higher torque in electric motors, the tires of e-cars can actually be exposed to higher loads.

You should pay attention to these differences when purchasing:

Tesla, BMW, Renault & VW: The ADAC compares these electric cars

For the first time, ADAC used four electric cars first registered in 2020 for the comparison. Model 3 from Tesla, BMW i2, VW ID.3 and the Zoe from Renault have been approved at least 7,000 times for two consecutive years. The data basis is therefore sufficient for the ADAC.

In addition to the lead in engine breakdowns, the e-cars are positive fewer breakdown calls in the “car key” category on. According to the ADAC, the reason could be that so-called keyless systems are already more common in electric cars than in combustion engines. If the car is opened without a key, the roadside assistants also have to go out less often to open cars because of forgotten or lost keys.

Apart from that, the ADAC no significant differences between the drive types established. E-car drivers therefore no longer need to worry about breakdowns in their vehicles, but also no less than anyone who drives a combustion engine. In the previous year, the ADAC found even more problems with the brakes in e-cars.
