Accusation against Canon: printer owners are brazenly ripped off

Those who buy a printer nowadays like to use the combination device, after all, documents sometimes have to be scanned and sent digitally. The fact that this is not always as easy as it sounds is now the reason for a lawsuit against the manufacturer Canon – and not an isolated case.

You would have to be a consumer in the USA, and it feels like you’re being thrown high compensation in the event of lawsuits, even for the most absurd reasons. The US is also suing the well-known camera and printer manufacturer Canon. The reason, however, is not a strange special case, but the Combination devices not working properly.

Scanning without ink? Canon won’t allow it

Specifically, it is about the following case, the many printer owners know from their everyday lives: You just want to use the scanner quickly, but the device refuses. The reason is quickly identified – the ink cartridges are empty or dried up again. So the scan function no longer works either, of course.

But wait a minute, what else does the ink have to do with the scanner? David Leacraft also asked himself this question, now his question has resulted in a legal dispute against the manufacturer (source: Bleeping computer). Leacraft accuses Canon of not keeping advertising promises. After all, Canon is selling a 3-in-1 multifunction device – not a printer that can only sometimes scan and fax.

The problem is already known for years and is not based on a user or configuration error. In response to inquiries from several customers, Canon has already confirmed that the affected devices, including several models from the Pixmar entry-level series, work in exactly the same way.

Canon is now being accused of itself to enrich unlawfully, because you force customers to constantly buy new ink cartridges – a problem that German customers should also be familiar with. According to the complaint, there is no technical reason for linking the scan function with the ink level.

Canon is threatened with expensive compensation in the US

The lawsuit was filed in New York State in the United States just last week, and there has not yet been a verdict. According to Bleeping Computer, other US customers of Canon could also be entitled to compensation if successful.

For German consumers, however, the decision is made in the USA no difference. Either you have to keep buying fresh ink in order to be able to scan or be careful your next purchase to choose a device with completely separate functions.
