“A Tesla Model 2 is coming”
Tesla has a cheaper version of the Model Y in the works. So says a Tesla employee. It could even be that this car will be linked to the autonomous taxi that is coming from the company.
Tesla Model 2
Although we state that a ‘Model 2’ is arriving, that’s actually not quite right. it is not the intention that the car will be called Model 2. It is quite likely that what this employee says is correct. The American brand started in 2012 with the model S, which was quite pricey, but has been introducing more and more cheaper cars.
We have known for some time that Tesla wants to bring a cheaper model to the market, but now that seems to be getting closer. It is rumored that it would be a compact car, in which the steering wheel and pedals could eventually be removed to make the car 100 percent self-driving. At the moment, however, the world is still a long way from that: it is now officially okay to drive autonomously in a car with a steering wheel. So it will probably be a very future-proof model.
Elon Musk
However, it will also take a while before this model appears. According to Elon Musk, we will not see him in 2023 anyway, but according to the employee of this news, we will. That is because Tesla wants to present the autonomous robot taxi in 2023 (although it will not make its first ride until 2024). On the other hand, we consider the chance small. The Tesla Cybertruck has also been postponed quite a few times, in addition there is still a Tesla Semi and a Tesla Roadster to come.
The idea of Tesla’s autonomous taxi is to achieve the lowest possible cost per kilometer. In 2019 he thought that he could save a cost of about 10 cents per kilometer, but that is probably different because of all the rising prices. In addition, the car must also become considerably more affordable when it comes to production costs. Tesla already has that pretty well under control. Production has gone from $84,000 in 2017 to $36,000 in 2022.
Model Y is set to become the world’s best-selling car of all time next year, a record now held by Toyota with Rav4 and Corolla. They were sold more than a million times in 2021.
