Nothing Phone (1): hardware
The Nothing Phone (1) is a midranger with strong specifications for an interesting price. For example, the phone comes with the Snapdragon 778G Plus that we know from the Motorola Edge 30, a phone that we were already able to test extensively and with benchmarks. It is a chipset with a 5G modem that performs well, although it cannot be compared with a powerhouse like the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.
The founder of both OnePlus and Nothing, Carl Pei, has made a very well-considered choice with this processor. The price, performance and energy consumption of the processor played a role in this. Carl Pei states that the Snapdragon 778G Plus is more economical than Qualcomm’s most powerful processors and Nothing has ensured that his phone does not make any compromises in terms of features. At the request of Nothing, Qualcomm has provided special support for wireless charging, which is normally not possible with the midrange processor.
The Nothing Phone (1) has a 6.55-inch Full HD+ AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. In addition, there are three cameras on the phone. On the back are a 50 MP main camera and a 50 MP wide-angle camera that can also shoot macro photos. On the front is a 16 MP selfie camera.
The phone gets at least 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage and the 4,500 mAh battery can be charged with a 33W fast charger. There is also support for 15W wireless charging. With this phone, the fingerprint scanner is on the side and there are stereo speakers.
Transparent design with LED lighting
But the most striking thing about the phone is of course the design. The Nothing Phone (1) has a transparent back with 900 white LEDs incorporated. In this video you will find out what you can do with this special lighting. In addition, there is an IP53 certification (splashproof and protected against dust), and a 3.5mm audio jack is missing.
Nothing Phone (1): software
The Nothing Phone (1) works with Android 12 and its own Nothing OS and can count on three years of Android upgrades and four years of security updates. So Android 13, Android 14 and Android 15 are coming to this phone. Samsung still remains a frontrunner in this area, but for a newcomer, Nothing is certainly not bad here. Even better than many established brands.
