Official: this is when iPhone must have USB-C

The bullet is through the church: this is when Apple must supply the iPhone with USB-C according to EU rules.

It’s been in the air for a while, but now it’s concrete. Every ‘portable device’ must be against the autumn of 2024 come with a USB-C port and of course a USB-C charger. This is to get union in charger supply and compatibility of any device with any charger.

iPhone needs USB-C

It is of course a general law, but the biggest reason that this has yet to be made mandatory is Apple and their iPhone, for which the brand has been rejecting USB-C for years. Their Lightning port is very old and, according to many, long obsolete, so USB-C is welcome. Not supplying USB-C seems to be stubborn, since almost all models of the iPad are already supplied that way.

Laptops also fall under this new rule and that is also unfortunate for Apple. The brand has just made a big fuss about the brand new MacBook Pros that MagSafe, their own magnetic connection, is back. That will change again in 2024. For an overview: all devices that must be supplied with a USB-C by 2024 are telephones, tablets, headphones and headsets, handhelds and portable speakers.

A rule that should therefore force Apple into action: so expect an iPhone with USB-C by 2024, perhaps already next year. (via BBC)
