More RAM, more power
Apple will come back in September with refreshed iPhones: the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Both TrendForce as Ming-Chi Kuo, two reliable sources in Apple country, say that all new Apple devices will have 6GB of working memory (RAM). The iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max already have this, but the regular iPhone 13 and 13 mini still have to make do with 4GB of RAM.
The working memory is one of the most important parts of a chip. The processor stores temporary files here – and there are a lot of them. The more RAM your iPhone has, the more tasks you can perform simultaneously. This is especially important if you edit a lot of photos and videos, or if you often have multiple tabs open in Safari. Even if you use a lot of apps that perform background tasks, more working memory comes in handy.
Fortunately, iOS 15 handles the available amount of RAM very well. That’s why the iPhone 13 runs just as well with ‘only’ 4GB of RAM. Many Android smartphones need at least 8GB or even 12GB of RAM for this. Still, more RAM is always welcome. Future iOS updates may require more gigabytes to run smoothly.

iPhone 14 Pro gets different kind of RAM than iPhone 14
This article may not seem too technical at first glance, but nothing could be further from the truth. While all new iPhones get 6GB of RAM, it’s a different kind. The Pro models have LPDDR5 RAM. This is faster and more energy efficient than the older LPDDR4X RAM in regular iPhone 14 phones.
However, we wonder whether the better working memory of the 14 Pro actually makes the device faster. The difference between the current iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 Pro is barely noticeable, while the Pro has no less than 2GB of RAM more. Yet it is striking that Apple does not immediately provide all iPhone 14 models with LPDDR5 RAM. The manufacturer will probably save a few euros in production costs in this way.
