‘My toddler can really make his own breakfast’

During the week, Samantha Scroggin makes sure her kids are ready to go out in time. But on the weekend they have to figure it out themselves. “My husband and I sleep in on Saturdays and Sundays.”

Samantha has two children, aged 4 and 7. When the children have to go to school, she makes sure that everyone has a shower and prepares to leave. ‘That’s a regular rule, we hardly ever leave on time,’ she says. She doesn’t want that rush hour on weekends. “If we don’t have to go anywhere, my husband and I sleep in.”

And that means that her children have to take care of themselves on Saturday and Sunday mornings. “My children are young, but no longer babies,” says Samantha. ‘Our youngest is certainly capable of defrosting a few frozen sandwiches or pouring milk over his muesli. And they can both rinse off a piece of fruit or open a breakfast bar.’

If one of the children is sick, it’s a different story. ‘Then of course we are there for them. But otherwise my husband and I make up for our sleep over the weekend. That is not only nice for us; it is also better for the children if they have well-rested parents.’
