WhatsApp gets links for video calls (just like with FaceTime)

WhatsApp will soon allow video chat sharing via links. A function that we already know from FaceTime, among others.

WhatsApp on your iPhone: video calling even easier

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta (the parent company of Facebook and WhatsApp, among others) wrote in a post about innovations that the popular messaging app is making this week. WhatsApp for your iPhone gives you the option to share links with one tap to start video calls.

However, this is nothing new for us. This function is very similar to the function of iOS 15. Since that software version, we could already do this with FaceTime. Fortunately, WhatsApp also adds it and you can call contacts that you don’t even have saved as a number.

More participants in video calls possible

In the same Facebook post, Zuckerberg isn’t just talking about WhatsApp video call shareable links. He also announces that you can now start a video chat with up to 32 people. These connections are therefore end to end encrypted. This is just not available at the moment. Until now, users can only call with so many contacts via audio.

We do think that WhatsApp is late in introducing these features. During the corona time we were all video calling massively. Now that seems to have faded a bit.

We have already written a lot about WhatsApp this year, because the popular messaging service introduces many new features. For example, you can send large files with WhatsApp, respond with just an emoji or you can delete WhatsApp messages after two days.

In addition, WhatsApp (and sister company Instagram) is working to implement paid functions. Would you be willing to pay for additional features on WhatsApp? Or is chatting enough already?
