what did you pay for your current phone?
Once in a while we are curious how much you spend on a new phone. We then compare these results with the results of previous years. Today it’s that time again! Vote in the brand new AW Poll.
Phones are getting more expensive
List prices of phones are also higher this year, and in some cases they remain the same as last year. But over the long run, phones have become more expensive. For example, the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ cost 799 euros and 899 euros respectively at launch in 2017. This year, the Galaxy S22, the Galaxy S22 Plus and the Galaxy S22 Ultra received suggested retail prices ranging from 849 euros to 1649 euros. There is a 750 euro difference between the most expensive models and for that amount you can now buy OPPO’s top phone from 2021.
The price increase depends on a variety of factors. More money goes into the development costs of a telephone and new technologies that are put into it. Over the years you have seen all kinds of innovation pass in review. Foldable phones, pop-up cameras, in-screen fingerprint scanners, in-screen selfie cameras, gesture control, super-fast charging and so on. In addition, the corona pandemic and the war in Ukraine also play a role. Price increases and non-deliverable or poorly-deliverable products are the order of the day, while factories are still trying to catch up during the peak of the pandemic.
On the other hand, phones are also getting better and more durable. They often receive longer updates and parts are also continuously improved. Especially in the middle segment we see many improvements in the editors. In terms of speed, these telephones are often not inferior to the telephones in the high segment and they often offer more than sufficient options. List prices are therefore going up, but we also last longer with a telephone.
AW Poll
We already asked it in 2019 and in 2021 and now we ask it again: We are curious what you paid for your current phone. This allows us to draw up the balance sheet over a longer period of time. Leave your vote in the poll and let us know your thoughts in the comments at the bottom of this article.
