The Stiftung Warentest comes to a clear result with the iPhone 12 (mini) and iPhone 12 Pro (Max). What is the verdict and how are the Apple phones of the current year performing? The answers in the article.
Stiftung Warentest awards grade: iPhone Pro receives a 1.8
Both the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 were purchased by Stiftung Warentest at their own expense and sent to the test laboratory. There you could take a close look at the new Apple phones and now come to one solid judgment: The Pro model received the best rating – it hailed a grade of 1.8 (good). The “normal” iPhone 12 shines a little worse, but still good with a grade of 2.0. The latter only gets a “Satisfactory” for “Stability”, the Pro version, however, a “Very good”. The explanation for the difference:
“Our test confirms this for the iPhone 12 Pro: after 100 falls from a height of 80 centimeters on a stone floor, the device shows no damage. Its stainless steel frame buffers the impacts particularly well. The iPhone 12 with an aluminum frame is a little heavier after the drop test and has scratches. The camera glass on the back of several devices broke, but the smartphones themselves remained functional. “

How well are the competition doing?
Among the new releases for 2020, the iPhone 12 Pro shares first place with the Samsung Galaxy Note 20, Note 20 5G, Note 20 5G Ultra and Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G – the South Korean models also get through the series the grade 1.8. However, things went even better last year, because the iPhone 11 Pro Max received a 1.7, the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus even a 1.6.
Important NOTE: In the meantime, Stiftung Warentest is stepping up and is bringing the last two aspirants of the new iPhone generation into the test laboratory with the iPhone 12 Pro Max and the iPhone 12 mini. The results are shared in an informative video. Interesting: Only the battery of the large iPhone 12 Pro Max really convinced the testers in the end, all other models are rather weak. The folding test is merciless.
For this purpose, the Apple cell phones land in a falling drum that simulates 100 falls from a height of 80 centimeters onto a hard stone floor. The result: They are all robust, but the stainless steel frame of the Pro models has fewer dents and scratches. The camera glass also broke here and there, but the function was basically retained. In short: Apple keeps its word, the new iPhones are actually tough.
And what did the testers like and what didn’t they like? Among other things, they were impressed by the “impressive” display of the two Apple phones, and the high contrast range and the excellent brightness of the screens were explicitly praised. On the other hand, there is criticism for the rather average battery life and the omitted accessories, Stiftung Warentest pointedly says: “Not using accessories is annoying in view of the high prices.” Conciliatory, however, the following final sentence: “Apart from that, everyone who has the necessary change for Apple’s display is likely -Smartphones have a lot of fun with them. “
