My wishes for the Smartwatch
The rumor mill is raising hopes that three new Apple Watch models will appear in the fall, including the successor to the Apple Watch SE. One or two wishes come to mind that I would like to see fulfilled. I will now reveal them in the current issue of the weekend column.
In autumn, Apple wants to ignite a veritable firework of new products. The portfolio includes the new Apple Watch 8, a special outdoor variant for extreme use, and then the second-generation Apple Watch SE. And that’s what today should be about.
Apple Watch SE 2: Three wishes for the new smartwatch
How would Apple have to design or improve the smartwatch in order to convince me too? As a quick reminder: So far I haven’t been able to bring myself to buy an Apple Watch. My personal, potential benefit in relation to the price has not justified a purchase so far. But maybe this will change should Apple actually hear my wishes and the Apple Watch SE 2 should be presented in one way or another in autumn 2022.
To be honest, I don’t think Apple needs to change that much. I stay on the carpet with my desire. But decide for yourself and read:
- Always-on display: The Apple Watch Series 5 had it first, followed by the Series 6 and currently the Series 7. Only the cheap Apple Watch SE expressly didn’t get it. Apple wanted to save money and so the screen stays dark when not in use. You want to be able to recognize the Apple Watch as a real watch and sometimes take a quick, sideways look at the time and information. I hope Apple improves and donates the feature to the budget model three years after the premiere. It doesn’t have to be the larger display of the 7 series, the older generation is sufficient.
The Apple Watch Se has been in the program since autumn 2020:
- Costs: Speaking of the price, it has to go down. The small Apple Watch SE model currently starts at just under 300 euros. My suggestion: finally throw the Apple Watch Series 3 (from 219 euros) out of the program and lower the price of the SE by 50 euros. The Apple Watch SE 2 would then also inherit the first SE generation and the Series 3. In return, the price will hit us in the middle – a good compromise. For example, from 249 euros for the small model (42 mm) and from 279 euros for the larger model (44 mm). I guess I wouldn’t be able to say no to this deal.
- Faster chip: The current Apple Watch SE is certainly not really slow either, but we have to think ahead and think about future security. In this respect, the use of a somewhat more modern chip set would definitely be recommended. the Dual core S6 from 2020 would be enough for me.
My thoughts for the weekend: The column wants to provide food for thought and reflect on the week’s “news flood” towards the end. A small selection of previous articles in the column:
Health features make the difference
What I would not necessarily need, would be the previously exclusive health features (blood oxygen and ECG app). For greater differentiation, they are welcome to remain with the respective top model. But an always-on display, a more modern chip and a small price reduction would be desirable for the Apple Watch SE. So Apple…deal or no deal?
