Best of Apple TV+ 2021
More than two years ago, Apple launched its own streaming service: Apple TV+. The offer was still very limited at the time, especially compared to services such as Netflix. In the years that followed, Apple happily continued to add movies and series.
The year 2021 was mainly a period with many follow-up seasons for Apple TV+. The stories of series that started the service such as The Morning Show, See, Dickinson and more continued. In addition, plenty of news has also been added. We list the best things for you.
Best New Series: foundation
There was no shortage of new series, but no series managed to leave such an impression as Foundation. This ambitious project is based on the great work of writer Isaac Asimov. The story is about a man who can see through mathematics that the empire will fall. To preserve all the knowledge of mankind, he wants to build Foundations full of knowledge for the people who come after them.
It must be said that the series does not look as good as the other shows on Apple TV+. It is a slow-paced story with complex subject matter and complicated time jumps. But the investment is worth it.
The runner-ups below show that despite the limited offer on Apple TV+, there is also a lot of diversity. From exciting science fiction to a hilarious musical series.

- dr. brain
- The Mosquito Coast
- calls
- schmigadoon!
New season: Ted Lasso Season 2
It was equally exciting. The first season of Ted Lasso, about an American football coach who will coach football in England, was so incredibly good that the second season had to be disappointing. Fortunately, that is absolutely not the case. The second season of Ted Lasso has been enjoying every episode.
This is largely due to the characters that you will love each and every one of them. It is insanely clever that the series remains interesting and fun without real bad guys. Among other things because you get a look behind the smiles. The always cheerful Ted, in particular, appears to be having a harder time mentally than you would expect.
Best new season runner ups
- Dickinson season 2 and 3
- Trying Season 2
- Mythic Quest Season 2
- For All Mankind Season 2
Best movie: code
It is unique how this film portrays the dynamics of a deaf family. Coda is about young Ruby who is the only one in her family who can belong, leaving her parents extremely dependent on her. She also likes to sing. She secretly does it for a boy she likes, but then it turns out that she actually has a good voice that her family will never hear.
Once Ruby becomes more involved in singing, she spends less time with her family. As you can expect, this results in an emotional film.
The fact that Apple likes to respond to your emotions with its films is apparent from the collection of runner-ups. With Palmer, for example, about an ex-con who takes care of a genderqueer kid. Or Swan Song, about a man who is terminally ill and gets the chance to send a clone of him to his family.
Best movie runner ups:
- palmer
- Swan Song
- cherry
- Finch
Best Documentary: 1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything
Apple has posted a bunch of compelling documentaries on Apple TV Plus this year. The documentary that sticks the longest is 1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything. Full of great artists like Aretha Franklin, The Rolling Stones, Marvin Gaye, Joni Mitchell and more and unique clips you’ve never seen before.
Best documentary runner-ups
- fathom
- The Velvet Underground
- Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry
Best for Kids: Blush
There’s plenty for kids, too, on Apple TV Plus in 2021. Topped by a short film in the style of a Pixar production, about an astronaut who ends up on a small planet where he meets an alien.
Best for kids runner ups
- Puppy Place
- Get Rolling with Otis
- The Snoopy Show
Apple TV+ in 2022: a look ahead
Apple will continue with new series and movies in 2022. In fact, the company states that a new series or film should be added every week. January starts with the film The Tragedy of Macbeth, with Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand.
For February, look forward to Severence, which tells a compelling story of technology that completely separates memories between home and work. This series is directed by Ben Stiller.
Martin Scorsese’s new film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro will also be placed exclusively on Apple TV+ in addition to the cinemas. This film, Killers of the Flower Moon, is about a series of murders of Native Americans in 1920.
In a documentary series, Apple TV Plus will take a look at the theme songs from all James Bond films later in the year.
