Before the end of the year, Sony strengthens and expands its team of in-house video game studios with this year’s fifth acquisition. After Housemaque, Nixxes Software, Firesprite and Bluepoint Games, it’s Valkyrie Entertainment – a support team that contributed to the development of Halo Infinite, but also God of War in 2018. PlayStation Studios President Hermen commented on the acquisition on Twitter. Hulst and the newly acquired studio are named an invaluable helper in the development of key PlayStation family brands.

If we want to look for deeper reasons for the acquisition, it is undoubtedly based on the long-standing relationship that has developed between Valkyrie and Sony in the past. Although the studio, which was hired externally to work on the assigned part of the development of specific titles, also collaborated with Microsoft, the ties to Japan are probably stronger. In addition to the aforementioned God of War, Valkyrie has also been involved in inFamous 2, Twisted Metal, since its inception in 2002. It has been openly said that they also entered the development of God of War: Ragnarök before the acquisition was announced. Of course, the PlayStation game – Gun Up – cannot be left out! – which could also help in deciding whether or not to make an investment.

Looking to the future, it is not clear at this time whether Sony will let Valkyrie work on its own games or continue to use them as support. From Hermen Hulst’s words, the second option seems more likely, but nothing may last forever and the path to their own big game may be similar to that of Asobi and their Astra, although in this case the situation was even more special due to the formal end of Japan Studios. However, Bluepoint could also seem like a good example, when after many successful ports they got to the remake of Demon’s Souls and in the next flight no one will probably prevent them too much.
