Apple agrees to pay employees $ 30 million for the searched bags case
Apple agreed to pay $ 30 million to employees of its Apple Stores who had to submit to bag checks. It took place during or after their hours. “This is a significant, non-reversible settlement obtained after nearly eight years of bitterly disputed litigation,” wrote Lee Shalov, one of the complainants.
Apple to pay employees $ 30 million
The case revolved around a practice implemented by Apple that required employees to show their bags and Apple devices before leaving work. These procedures generally took place outside working hours. A group of employees filed a lawsuit in 2013, claiming they had to be paid for time spent undergoing security checks. Justice had found them right on this subject in February 2020.
Apple was accused of violating California laws. The company said controls were necessary to ensure products were not stolen from stores by employees. She also claimed that employees who did not enjoy the process should not bring a bag to work, or they should leave their own iPhones at home. Previously, Apple gave employees cards to verify the serial number of any Apple products they owned. These cards were signed by an Apple Store manager, then verified at the end of each day, comparing them to the device itself to make sure they matched.
The action only concerned workers at 52 Apple Stores in California. The group has 14,683 employees, each of whom will receive $ 1,286 as part of the settlement.
