good boy

Big Boy follows a year in the life of Hidde, a twelve-year-old boy in an apparently fun, even colorful, but in fact unhappy family. His hardworking father can unexpectedly throw huge tantrums, his charming but fickle mother offers no support, and he sees his Reformed parents’ already not so good marriage crumbling quickly. The members of the family deceive each other, lie when it suits them.

Outside, playing football with his friends, Hidde feels safer than inside. More and more he becomes a daydreamer and rises in fantasies about exploits with the ball. He arms himself with silence, with observations of his rebellious brother being beaten and humiliated by his father. In this way he survives through cleverness and calculating behavior – at a great distance from his heroes in Dutch professional football who are on their way to the world top in this year, 1969.

Hidde is not nearly as strong as his idols in the stadiums. Or is it? Finally, he makes a frantic attempt in this gripping tale of football, which is not just a game but a lifeline in a time of rising prosperity and crumbling certainties.

Tanja Nijmeijer

I joined the guerrillas with the firm belief that I would never get out of the jungle again. That I would dedicate my life and give to a revolutionary ideal. In 2012, the guerrillas decided that there should be a peace process that, unlike previous attempts, also led to a disarmament process. My life in the jungle was suddenly interrupted and I started my reintegration process into Colombian society. Bad luck? Luck? A happy accident?

This book is an account of what I saw and experienced. That does not necessarily fit into the frame of reference that most Europeans have of the farc, or of Colombia. Testimonials are available from kidnap victims, from soldiers, from politicians, but this is my story, the testimony of someone who is still convinced that another world is possible.
