Hertz probably does not order 100,000 Tesla vehicles directly from the manufacturer

In the past week, there has been a pretty amazing piece of news in the media. We also reported that Hertz placed a bulk order with Tesla and bought up to 100,000 vehicles from the automaker. But barely a week later, the whole thing no longer seems so real, Tesla guru Elon Musk announced that a deal has not yet been reached.

The story is as interesting as it is confusing. After Hertz officially announced the deal last week, the automaker’s market value rose to over $ 1 trillion. A group called the “Tesla Silicon Valley Club” also celebrated this and thanked Musk. But this unpacked the truth as an answer.

According to Musk, no contract has yet been concluded. Furthermore, the CEO explains that the demand is currently above the production capacities, so Hertz cannot be offered any special conditions. The devil lies in the detail, if you take a closer look at the press release from Hertz, then there is talk of an order for 100,000 Teslas by the end of 2022.

It is only mentioned that the vehicles are to be added to their fleet by the end of 2022, not because an order has been placed or the vehicles have been ordered directly from Tesla. The Gizmodo magazine asked Hertz again and received another vague statement from a spokesman for the company.

The rental company’s press office announced that 100,000 Tesla vehicles were ordered in the past week, so the company does not clarify where that happened. It is also said that the first vehicles are already being delivered.

So the facts are as follows: Hertz placed a Tesla order that apparently was not received directly from the car manufacturer, but from dealers and third-party providers. These will now deliver the models to the landlord by 2022. Why Tesla didn’t clarify this after last week’s vortex is unknown, but it could be due to the lack of a PR department. Either way, Tesla responded intelligently to the announcement by simply not saying anything.
