Netflix manipulated search results after controversy
The American streaming service Netflix was undoubtedly shocked and even manipulated search results.
Do you remember that 2020 riot related to the movie Cuties? The French film was proudly presented by Netflix. But the trailer already went wrong. There were many angry reactions. It was described, among other things, as a film for pedophiles. Netflix publicly disregarded the negative attention. Behind the scenes, the service has indeed taken measures.
Internal documents, in the hands of The Verge, show that Netflix manipulated search results. The film Cuties was therefore harder to find on the streaming service. Normally, Netflix highlights new releases on the home screen of the service. You can also see what’s coming soon on Netflix. In both cases, Cuties was undetectable. Done consciously, as it turns out. In addition, the film was not found in the kids category.
In short, removing Cuties from Netflix went a bridge too far for the American streaming service. But making it harder for you to find the title in the library was less of an issue for the company. Nevertheless, the service will think twice about the type of content they offer to subscribers.
