Telegram and providers record record numbers during WhatsApp outage
It was big news; the massive outage at Facebook last week. Other parties have benefited greatly from this, according to the new information.
Telegram benefits
Telegram is one of the lucky few to have benefited greatly from this week’s outage at Facebook. Due to the outage, Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp were down for seven hours. It would be a human error that occurred during routine maintenance.
According to Telegram founder Pavel Durov, this has resulted in a record 70 million new users for messaging service Telegram. Signal, another messaging service, also saw a rise of ‘millions’, but exact numbers have not been shared by them.
Providers
Providers also clearly saw that WhatsApp had a malfunction. KPN saw a doubling in the number of SMS messages sent. At its peak, at 10 p.m., four times as many text messages were sent than usual. Vodafone saw a 75 percent increase in text messages and 30 percent more phone calls. T-Mobile recorded an increase of 120 percent in the number of text messages and 10 percent in telephone traffic.
