Google rolls out handy Android function to more versions

You want this function too! And that’s why Google is rolling out this handy Android feature to multiple versions.

Google launched Android 11 last summer. In this version a function was applied that you do not notice that it is very useful. It is a feature that resets the app permissions automatically. So if you don’t use an app for several months, the operating system may revoke the permission that the application asked you when you first installed it.

And that’s definitely a feature you’d want to use. Because otherwise these apps will continue to run in the background, collecting information. But unfortunately it is only available on a relatively small number of devices. This is because most Android manufacturers only support their devices with platform updates for a few years. Fortunately, that’s about to change.

From December 2021, Google will roll out that functionality to all devices with Android 6 (Marshmallow) and higher, the company announced yesterday in a developer update. The feature comes courtesy of a Google Play Services update that the company will roll out to “billions” of devices.

Update

Once you have the new software on your device, the feature will be enabled by default for apps targeting Android 11 or later. For those apps built for older versions of the operating system, you have the option to enable them manually. A little more work, but still useful.

This is one of those little quality-of-life updates that most Android users should appreciate, as it can be easy to forget all the permissions you may have granted to an app when you first installed it.
