WhatsApp allegedly violates GDPR. He was fined gigantically

WhatsApp communicator is a very used, but also quite controversial tool. In the last months he’s wearing a bowler hat mainly due to changes in the rules for handling user data, which originally never had to leave the boundaries of this service. While in this case she is more concerned with the good name and comfort of concerned users, one older problem caught up with her. The Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) has imposed a financial penalty on the operators of this compliance with the GDPR Regulation. The fine is a giant 225 million er, that is about 5.7 billion crowns.

This is the culmination of a case that has been on the table since 2018, with DPC being responsible from the outset for controlling WhatsApp’s business (or Facebook Inc.) in the EU. The Irish institution has now expressed its views in a document with 266 pages. So the case is definitely not simple and contains a lot of arguments. However, the principles of GDPR, according to which the user should be clearly informed about why, how and by whom his data are used, WhatsApp does not fulfill several basic functions your application.

For example, the problem is when the user allows the display of their contact list while they are Revealed phone numbers of people who do not have WhatsApp at all. The final document is full of such examples. In addition to the fine, DPC gave the operators WhatsApp services three months to settle the objections. Facebook Inc. defends himself, of course, denies much of the offense and considers the fine disproportionate.
