OneDrive wants to match Google Photos with new feature

Microsoft OneDrive takes on direct competition with paid Google Photos by introducing a new editing feature.

Since Google Photos is no longer free, users have to store all their snaps elsewhere. We previously suggested a lot of alternatives that are especially useful because of unlimited or non-unlimited storage space. OneDrive is not necessarily one of them, but a new editing feature makes Microsoft’s service suddenly a lot more attractive.

OneDrive introduces editing

As of the time of writing, it is possible to mount photos in OneDrive with editing tools. Microsoft announces the first batch of new features in a blog post and promises that more will be released during the course of this year.

Users can crop, rotate, and adjust exposure, color, contrast, and shadows among other things in OneDrive. The idea behind the editing features is that users can edit and share or save photos directly from OneDrive. You don’t have to open Photoshop first to balance the colors.

Google Photos has similar tools available to the user. Under the magnifying glass it appears that Microsoft offers just a few more sliders and options. The service actually beats Google with this. You are the best judge of the quality of the editing software. In any case, it is clear that both companies can effectively brighten up a photo using advanced algorithms.

The new in-app editing options are available for the web version and Android app of OneDrive. For now, only JPEG and PNG formats are supported. It is not known what else Microsoft has in store for the service.
