CoronaMelder app now also available for iPhone 5S and iPhone 6

The Dutch CoronaMelder app works best when as many people as possible use it. Starting today, iPhone 5S or iPhone 6 owners can also download it.

CoronaMelder now available for iPhone 5S and iPhone 6

The Ministry of Health has announced this. The original CoronaMelder app only worked on devices with iOS 13.5 and newer, leaving the iPhone 6 and older bypassed. This is because the app took advantage of the special software that Apple and Google developed together to make Corona apps work properly.

In December, Apple updated this software and released an update for iOS 12, a version of iOS that works on older devices. The CoronaMelder app has now also added this software, so that people with an iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 can now also download and use the app.

This special software was necessary because apps are normally not allowed to collect data from surrounding devices in the background. Apple and Google therefore joined forces to tackle this in a privacy-friendly manner.
