Controversial card banned in almost every format

In the standard format, Uro, Titan of Nature’s Wrath had been banned for half a year. Now the controversial Magic card has also been banned in almost every other trading card game format.

Magic: The Gathering’s competitive metagame has been thoroughly shaken. A total of 15 cards were banned across multiple formats. The formats affected are Historic, Pioneer, Modern, Legacy and Vintage.

One card was hit particularly hard: Uro, Titan of Natures Wrath was banned from Historic, Pioneer and Modern. In the standard format, the card was withdrawn from circulation in September 2020. Thus, Uro can only be played in the particularly powerful formats Legacy and Vintage, in which it is just one strong card among many.

Uro is so strong because for just three mana it draws a card, grants life points and brings an additional land into play – both when it comes into play and with every attack. Even if the card is destroyed, it can still be cast from the graveyard later in the game. The constant life points made the card a nightmare for aggro decks, while control decks couldn’t keep up with the constant card draws.

However, Uro, Titan of Nature’s Wrath, was far from the only card banned on February 15th. Without Uro, only the next best deck would take the dominant position on the card. As a result, a number of other top decks have also lost their most important cards, giving numerous deck archetypes new opportunities, especially in the Pioneer and Modern formats.

The vintage format, however, is a special feature. There was the card Lurrus of the Dream-Den removed from the bans list. After all, the format is characterized by the fact that practically any card from the history of the trading card game can be used in it, no matter how strong or unfair.

The card was banned in May 2020 because the original version of the companion mechanic was too strong even for the vintage format. Since the Rule change in June 2020 However, Lurrus of the Dream-Den no longer poses such a threat to the format, which is why the ban has now been reversed.
