According to The Information Facebook will release its own smartwatch next year. The device would focus on health and sending messages. The smart watch must become a direct competitor to the Apple Watch.
The smartwatch would get its own data connection, so you can use it without a phone. The main apps are supposedly Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp, but the watch also tracks your workouts and can interact with popular fitness apps.
The first version of the watch will probably run on Android software, but Facebook would also work on its own operating system. What we will have to pay for the smartwatch is not yet known. However, it is likely to be offered close to cost. Facebook wants to gain market share in this way. The device is therefore probably cheaper than the Apple Watch SE, Apple’s entry-level model.
Still, the question is whether the watch will be a success. The Information thinks consumers will not be keen to share their health data with Facebook. The social network does not have a good reputation when it comes to privacy.
Facebook and Apple are at war
The news about Facebook’s smartwatch comes at a striking time. The social platform has gone to war with Apple. Facebook is upset that Apple is rolling out a tracker alert this spring. Apps will soon have to ask users for permission to place tracking codes. These are necessary to show targeted advertisements. According to Facebook, this feature in iOS 14 has disastrous consequences for advertisers.
Apple in turn criticizes Facebook’s earnings model. The lack of user privacy is a social problem, according to Tim Cook. Facebook would do too little to keep fake news out. These messages are very lucrative, but they also lead to mistrust and possibly even violence.
