Disney + moves closer to Netflix with nearly 95 million subscribers

Will the Disney + tidal wave ever stop? In a press release published on February 11, 2021, Disney says it is approaching 95 million subscribers worldwide. An impressive performance when you consider that the service was launched less than two years ago. Of course, the firm owes this success to the Disney + catalog made up of the best Pixar animated films, Disney classics, the Star Wars saga, the vast majority of Marvel films or even signed documentaries. National Geographic.

This catalog, far too “family” oriented for some, will finally be diversified on February 23, 2021 with the arrival of a new bouquet: Star. We find there hundreds of films and series from productions ABC, Freeforme, Searchlight or Fox. Moreover, we advise you to subscribe to Disney + (€ 6.99 / month) before the launch of Star, the subscription price was set to increase after the deployment of this package.

Now close to 95 million, Disney sets itself the goal of reaching 260 million subscribers by 2024. To give you an idea, Netflix has just passed 200 million subscribers worldwide. Only, and given the exponential growth of Disney +, it is highly likely that the service will achieve its goals and steal the number one spot from Netflix.

The exclusives, the sinews of war

To attract more and more users, Disney + will adopt a strategy similar to all other streaming platforms: exclusive films and series. After the planetary cardboard of The Mandalorian, the firm with big ears has planned to launch an avalanche of series from the Star Wars and Marvel universes. On the Star Wars side alone, we note the upcoming arrival of a dozen series, including The Book of Boba Feet, Ashoka, Obi-wan kenobi or Andor.

Regarding Rangers of the New Republic, the recent and shameful eviction of Gina Carano by Disney may well harm the project. Indeed, the actress was to be the headliner of this series centered on her character Cara Dune, a former imperial who became a ranger for the rebellion in The Mandalorian. Note also that more and more voices are raised against Disney’s decision to dismiss Gina Carano, calling for a boycott of season 3 of Disney’s flagship series.
