This year will be in the spirit of switching off 3G networks. Will it affect you in any way?
In 2021, a large technological “change” will take place on the territory of the Czech Republic. Mobile operators and other partners connected with the Association of Mobile Network Operators (APMS) in the Czech Republic will take care of the massive switch-off of older 3G transmitters this year. Their space on the towers and the frequency ranges of this technology the introduction of more modern standards will give way. Among other things, the long-discussed and so far criticized auction of 5G frequencies is over and the winners can get to work. How exactly will this transition take place and how will it affect end users?
Switching off 3G networks in the Czech Republic
The intention was announced a few hours ago by APMS on its website, stating that the main purpose is, of course increase the speed of the Internet connection on mobile devices. More modern 4G and 5G technologies should take care of that. What is the difference? If in the most modern 5G networks the internet speed reaches up to 1000 Mbit / s, in 3G networks, it is typically around 10 Mbit / s. Most customers will not even notice this change in technology. Their phone for mobile internet is automatically used and will continue to use the currently operated one 4G (LTE), or the latest 5G network. There is already a minimum of mobile phones, which still rely only on 3G networks to connect to the Internet. And they are almost all older than eight years or more.
Even after switching off the 3G network, people with their old phone can easily call and be able to receive SMS. Voice calls and SMS are provided in 99% of the territory of the Czech Republic by even older 2G technologies, which are not covered by the planned renewal. Likewise, turning off 3G networks in no way does not endanger the availability of emergency calls, including eg e-call (emergency call of the vehicle in case of an accident). Each operator will decide on the reconstruction of the network in its own way, and the dates for switching off 3G in the Czech Republic will vary according to the provider and the regions. Companies should inform their customers about gradual changes. A bit of history at the end: The first 3G (UMTS) networks were in the Czech Republic launched in 2004. Then with a transmission speed of 3 Mbit / s.
