New releases on Netflix in June 2023
Netflix is the Vieille Garde of the streaming services available in the Netherlands. Since the start of Disney +, a lot of content has disappeared from the platform, but this is more than made up for by the huge influx of Netflix originals.
In terms of subscriptions, there are three options to choose from. Basic ($7.99 per month) provides access to a single device and has the lowest image quality. With standard (€ 11.99 per month) you get the option to share your account with 1 person and it is possible to stream content in HD. Premium ($15.99 per month) provides access to 4 devices with streaming in ultra HD quality. In this article, we take a look at two new series and a documentary that will be shown on Netflix in the coming month.
Series: Black Mirror, Season 6
It is a genre that is becoming more and more outdated. What is the function of dystopian sci-fi when the real world is full of oligarchs who use the latest technological ingenuity to drain the earth and the lower classes until the whole mess collapses irrevocably?
Yet there is at least one series that continues to capture the imagination with sharply and intelligently written episodes. And not just the imagination. Black Mirror episodes coming true were once a funny meme, the question is how long will we keep laughing.
Now Black Mirror is obviously not a comedy. The key is in the name. The show holds up a black mirror to the viewer. Often it is about how new developments in technology change our lives, but on a deeper level the focus is on the dark side of human nature. Doesn’t mean there’s nothing to laugh about, of course, for fans of dark humor, Black Mirror is top entertainment.
The fifth season was less well received by critics than the previous four, but opinions remain unanimous that Black Mirror is one of the most profound series in streaming land. The exact date has not yet been announced, but season six will be available on Netflix sometime next month.
Documentary: Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song
“And I’ve seen your flag on the marble arch
But listen love, love is not some kind of victory march, no
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah”
Everyone knows the song ‘Hallelujah’. From Shrek maybe, or for those who lived through the 90s through Jeff Buckley’s translation. The latter sang it with a little more sense of phrasing, but the lyric, if you ask me, one of the best ever written, comes from the pen of Leonard Cohen. And this Leonard Cohen proves that the best songs are often the product of the deepest suffering.
An album that has already been paid for and yet is rejected by the label. It almost never happens, but it happened to Cohen. He was a poet first, a musician second. It is therefore not surprising that his most famous song enjoyed the greatest popularity among others. But the spirit that gave birth to the beautiful sentiment in the song is one worth knowing.
In the documentary, a biography of Cohen is wrapped around the story of a song. The result has been warmly received by the vast majority of viewers so far. From June 1, Leonard’s story can be seen on Netflix.
Series: Barracuda Queens, Season 1
Imagine you are a Swedish teenager in the 90s and you have worked your way into debt. What are you doing then? You gather some friends and loot the houses of your rich neighbors, of course! It almost makes you nostalgic, no double glazing to be seen (let alone safety glass). A thin teenage arm pushes a crowbar through the window of a villa and off you go.
Based on true events, the trailer says. I don’t believe much of it, but that shouldn’t spoil the fun. In the beginning things go well for the ladies, but soon the police start asking questions. When the business comes under pressure, and there is a lot of money to distribute, the suspicious looks come out of the closet. Is that going well?
Always exciting, a new show not based on a book or other piece of media. IF it was, we’ll find out soon enough. Barracuda Queens will be streaming on Netflix from June 5.
