This application contains malware and was nevertheless recommended by Google.
Google has revealed a dangerous application that has over ten million installations in the Play Store. Most striking is that Google until recently recommended this application itself. I am one of the most popular groups of tools for barcode readers, and probably everyone has one in their mobile phones. Unfortunately, malicious code appeared in the innocent-looking Barcode Scanner application. What is causing this Trojan horse?
Barcode Scanner was one of the most popular barcode and QR code readers, with a total of over 10 million installations. For a long time, the free application did exactly what its name promises. In the last update of this application, however, a Trojan horse was discovered. Malware in Barcode Scanner can open junk websites using the device’s built-in browser. The application can even load web pages in the background without any necessary user interaction, which makes it especially dangerous.
Even more astonishing is the fact that the Barcode Scanner application was part of the Google Play Pass program. The app has already been removed from the Play Store, but if you have it on your device, you’ll need to remove it manually. Google really should be more careful in the future about which developers to support.
What barcode reader do you use?
